Thankas are paintings generally associated with Tibetan Buddhism as aids to meditation. The art form has an unbroken tradition harking back to the murals of Ajanta. It is very much alive even today. Thanka painting as an art form became popular with the spread of the Lama schools to parts of India, Nepal, Bhutan, and even Mongolia. Seen here is the Bhava Chakra or the wheel of life representing the Buddha's teachings. To Buddhists, existence is a cycle of life, death, rebirth, and suffering that they seek to escape altogether.
